Kelsea Ballerini unexpectedly found her breakthrough moment.
Despite being initially dismissed by country music executives who thought Taylor Swift had already filled the genre's quota of blonde teenage female singers, Kelsea Ballerini persevered and landed a record deal six years later at the age of 20. Since then, she has been steadily rising to fame, becoming the first female country artist to have the first three singles from her debut record go No. 1 on country radio. She has also achieved multiple Grammy nominations, collaborated with popular pop artists, and sold out headlining concerts around the world. Despite her success, Ballerini has yet to have a major crossover moment into the mainstream music scene.
This weekend marks Kelsea Ballerini's debut appearance on "Saturday Night Live," a traditional milestone of mainstream success, which coincides fittingly with her recent breakthrough. The 29-year-old country singer released a highly emotional and candid six-song EP and short film on Valentine's Day, detailing her recent divorce from fellow country singer Morgan Evans, 37. The lyrics of the EP surprised many in Nashville, but what truly astonished fans was an incredibly detailed tell-all interview that coincided with the release. Initially, their divorce played out like many other country breakups, with both artists releasing tasteful music addressing the subject. However, Evans debuted an unusually personal and mournful ballad called "Over For You," in which he sang about the pain of being left behind, suggesting the divorce was not his idea. Ballerini, on the other hand, maintained that her album "Subject to Change" was not a divorce album.
After her divorce, Kelsea Ballerini remained mostly quiet until the sudden release of "Rolling Up the Welcome Mat" on Feb. 14. The collection of songs provides an uncomfortably straightforward explanation of what went wrong in her marriage. In "Mountain With a View," she responds directly to Evans' ballad, revealing that she's still wearing the ring but thinks they're done trying. She references their engagement at age 23 and suggests that she realized he loved her more then than he did at the end of their relationship. In "Blindsided," Ballerini addresses Evans' implication that he was clueless about why their marriage ended. She notes that they spent years in therapy together, questioning whether he was blindsided or just blind. On "Interlude," she expresses her desire to reveal more details but is advised by her lawyer not to do so.
Kelsea Ballerini's EP was an instant hit with her fans and attracted plenty of new listeners who were curious about her divorce. The songs have garnered over 20 million combined streams on Spotify alone. In a tweet, one listener admitted to being in a happy relationship but still listened to the EP multiple times.
Ballerini continued to deviate from the typical Nashville playbook by choosing to do only one interview about the project. Instead of talking to a veteran music journalist or country radio host, she opted to speak with Alex Cooper on the hugely popular Spotify podcast, "Call Her Daddy," which has more female listeners than any other show on the platform.
During the interview, Ballerini answered Cooper's questions candidly, providing some nuanced insights into how she and Evans grew apart. However, she did not hold back her anger and expressed frustration with Evans for releasing "Over For You" before the divorce was finalized. She also revealed that she was devastated when she learned that Evans wanted half the house that she had paid for, and she would have to pay alimony if she didn't comply. Despite her feelings, she ultimately gave him half of the house.
Ballerini expressed her disbelief to Cooper on how she could have been married to someone for so long without realizing certain aspects of their character. The reaction to Ballerini's EP and subsequent interview has been immense, with fans and tabloids eagerly following the story. Evans released his own statement which contradicted some of Ballerini's claims, adding fuel to the fire. Ballerini's personal life has become a topic of fascination and she has even been linked to actor Chase Stokes from the Netflix show "Outer Banks." The Nashville music industry has been taken aback by the level of attention surrounding the couple's breakup, as they were known to keep a relatively low profile. Ballerini has now become a fixture in Page Six and her "Call Her Daddy" episode continues to rank highly on Spotify's charts a week after its release.
